Thomas Baumgärtel studia arte a Colonia (D) si laurea in Psicologia e diventa uno dei più importanti graffiti artist. La sua Bananaspray “SprayBanane” caratterizza musei e luoghi d’arte in tutto il mondo ed ormai è diventata il marchio di qualità, il logo non ufficiale di una scena artistica. Ma Baumgärtel è molto di più che un Bananasprayer o un pittore nel senso classico, il suo lavoro intermediale comprende sin dall’inizio degli anni ottanta disegni, edizioni, stampe, fotocollage, rielaborazioni spray dei capolavori scultorei e pittorici dei grandi maestri. Da oltre trent’anni Baumgärtel lotta con la banana per la libertà dell’arte. Oltre che con le sue azioni spray sovversive anche le sue performance ed i suoi happenings hanno attirato l’attenzione, soprattutto una gigantesca scultura di una banana pieghevole per la porta principale del duomo di Colonia (D). Ancora oggi aspetta il via libera per il progetto Banana nella porta di Brandenburgo “Banane im Brandenburger Tor” a Berlino (D). Baumgärtel vive e lavora a Colonia (D). I suoi lavori si trovano in collezioni sia pubbliche che private.

Thomas Baumgärtel studied in arts and psychology in Cologne (D). Then he began one of the most important graffiti artist. His Bananaspray “SprayBanane” features museums and art places around the world and has now become a brand of quality, the unofficial logo of an art scene. But Baumgärtel is more than a Bananasprayer or a painter in the classical sense; since 1980s his intermedia work includes includes drawings, editions, prints, photocollages, spray re-elaborations of masters’ sculptures and paintings. For over thirty years, Baumgärtel has struggled with the banana for the freedom of the art. His subversive spray actions, his performances and happenings have also impacted the public; above all a giant sculpture of a banana put in the main door of Cologne cathedral. He is still waiting the permission fto install the Banana project in Brandenburg’s Tor in Berlin (D). Thomas Baumgärtel lives and works in Cologne. His works are present in many public and private collections

Thomas Baumgärtel studierte in Köln Freie Kunst und Diplom Psychologie und wurde einer der bekanntesten Sprayer. Seine Spraybanane zeichnet weltweit die besten Museen und Kunstorte aus. Sie ist mittlerweile zum Qualitätssiegel und inoffiziellen Logo der Kunstszene geworden. Er ist aber weitaus mehr als nur der Bananensprayer und ein Maler im klassischen Sinne. Sein intermediales Werk umfasst seit Anfang der 80er Jahre neben Zeichnungen, Editionen, Druckgrafiken auch Fotocollagen, Übersprühungen von “Alten Meister”-Gemälden und Objekten. Dabei hat er sich keineswegs nur mit dem traditionellen Staffeleibild, sondern auch intensiv mit der Wandmalerei im öffentlichen Raum beschäftigt. Mit der Banane kämpft Baumgärtel, seit über 30 Jahren für die Freiheit der Kunst. Neben seinen subversiven Sprayaktionen haben seine Performances und Happenings, besonders die mit einer überdimensionalen, auffaltbaren Bananenskulptur für das Hauptportal des Kölner Domes, erhebliches Aufsehen erregt. Bis heute wartet die Aktion „Banane im Brandenburger Tor” in Berlin auf ein Startzeichen. Baumgärtel lebt und arbeitet in Köln, (D), seine Werke sind in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen. Er arbeitet mit 20 Galerien zusammen.
