Quando più di trent’anni fa mia moglie ed io scoprimmo la valle de La Serpara, , essa ci apparve un diamante grezzo, da far scintillare e diventare un gioiello. Fin da subito fu chiaro che sarebbe stata una sfida titanica. Da allora lavoriamo ogni giorno sul giardino in modo tale da integrare tra loro natura e opere d’arte. Un vecchio contadino, venuto a visitare La Serpara dopo tanto tempo, esclamò: Hai trovato l’America! (intendeva cioè un mondo nuovo). All’inizio si trattava di cogliere e far vivere tutte le possibilità di questa affascinante tenuta, una vallata contenuta dal Rio Chiaro, un torrente di acque pulite e gorgoglianti, e da pareti di roccia. Si trattava di farsi guidare dalla natura, di intraprendere i primi timidi interventi e così realizzare le proprie idee. Scoprivamo continuamente nuovi angoli e aree adiacenti al giardino che, nel tempo, avremmo acquistato e integrato alla proprietà. In questo modo, La Serpara è cresciuta lentamente, sino alla grandezza attuale che corrisponde a circa 4 ettari. Un artista ha bisogno tuttavia per lavorare anche di uno spazio protetto; così venne costruita anche una casetta, che forniva di un semplice tetto uno spazio limitrofo: era così sorto un primo luogo di lavoro. Ma ben presto le esigenze aumentarono, e cominciò la lotta per le concessioni edilizie. In tal modo, da quel primo piccolo luogo di lavoro sorse un comodo atelier, da una capanna mezza diroccata uno studio per i progetti. Come divenne grande la voglia di costruire qui delle sculture! Le opere create in tal modo venivano posizionate nel giardino, una volta tornate dalle esposizioni. Ogni singola collocazione veniva scelta tenendo accuratamente sotto controllo l’armonia tra arte e natura, i singoli lavori si sviluppavano in diretta correlazione con il luogo; anche amici e visitatori ne erano entusiasti. In questo modo divenne sempre più concreta l’idea di invitare amici artisti a collaborare alla strutturazione del giardino: un compito per niente facile, dal momento che si trattava di mettere insieme le idee e le visioni più diverse, la libertà degli artisti, il rispetto della natura e del paesaggio dato. Una sfida a cui lavoriamo, insieme agli artisti invitati, ormai da più di vent’anni; uno sviluppo che continua a crescere in sintonia con il territorio. I visitatori che arrivano alla Serpara percorrendo la tortuosa strada provinciale, si immergono così in un altro mondo, raggiungono un luogo di contemplazione, in cui poter godere con tutta calma l’arte e la natura

When my wife and I discovered La Serpara valley more than thirty years ago, it seemed to us like a rough diamond that could be made to sparkle - a jewel. It was immediately clear it would be a huge challenge. Since then, we have been working every day to further expand the site and make it possible for nature and works of art to complement each other. An old farmer who visited La Serpara again after a long time, said: Hai trovato l’America! (You have found America, the new world!) At the beginning it was about experiencing and capturing all the possibilities of this fascinating estate, a valley landscape bordered by Rio Chiaro, a clean rippling stream, and bright rock walls. It was worthwhile letting yourself be guided by nature, undertaking early gentle interventions and implementing our own ideas. Again and again we discovered new corners and surfaces which could be supplemented in a special way with the existing elements. La Serpara slowly grew to its current size of about 4 hectares. An artist also needs a protected space where to work, and so a small house was built and the adjacent area covered with a roof. A first work area was created. Soon claims grew greater and the struggle for building permits began. From the small work area a spacious artist’s workshop was built, and a drawing studio obtained from a semi-decayed shed. The desire to build sculptures in this place was huge! The resulting works were placed in the garden after they returned from exhibitions. Every single site was carefully selected in view of its art-and-nature interplay, and individual tasks were developed specifically for each location. Also friends and visitors were thrilled. Thus, the idea to invite friends of artists to work on the design of the garden caught on faster and faster. This is no easy task because the wide variety of ideas and views, artistic liberties, respect for nature and natural conditions must be brought together under one roof. A challenge for which we and the invited artists have been working for more than twenty years - a development that continues to grow in harmony with the entire area. Visitors getting to La Serpara from the provincial road through a bumpy path dive into a different world and reach a contemplative place where they can peacefully enjoy art and nature.

Mein Garten Paul Wiedmer Als meine Frau und ich vor mehr als dreißig Jahren das Tal La Serpara entdeckten, erschien es uns es wie ein ungeschliffener Diamant, der zum funkeln gebracht werden kann - ein Kleinod. Sofort war klar, es wird eine Riesenherausforderung. Seither arbeiten wir jeden Tag daran, das Gelände weiter auszubauen, so dass sich Natur und Kunstwerke ergänzen. Ein alter Bauer der nach langer Zeit wieder einmal La Serpara besuchte, meinte: Hai trovato l’America! (Du hast Amerika gefunden, die neue Welt!) Am Anfang ging es darum, all die Möglichkeiten dieses faszinierenden Anwesens zu erleben und zu erfassen, einer Tallandschaft, die vom Rio Chiaro, einem sauberen plätschernden Bach und hellen Felswänden eingefasst wird. Es galt, sich von der Natur leiten zu lassen, erste sanfte Eingriffe vorzunehmen und eigene Ideen zu verwirklichen. Immer wieder entdeckten wir neue Winkel und Flächen, die sich auf besondere Weise mit dem Vorhandenen ergänzen ließen. La Serpara wuchs langsam zu der heutigen Größe von zirka 4 Hektaren an. Ein Künstler braucht aber auch einen geschützten Raum zum Arbeiten und so wurde ein Häuschen gebaut, der daneben liegende Platz überdacht. Ein erster Arbeitsplatz war entstanden. Schon bald wurden die Ansprüche grösser und der Kampf um Baubewilligungen begann. Aus dem kleinen Arbeitsplatz entstand ein großzügiges Atelier, aus einem halbverfallenen Schuppen ein Zeichnungsstudio. Die Lust, an diesem Ort Skulpturen zu bauen war groß! Die entstandenen Werke wurden im Garten aufgestellt, nachdem sie von Ausstellungen zurückkamen. Jeder einzelne Standort wurde sorgfältig auf das Zusammenspiel zwischen Kunst und Natur ausgewählt, einzelne Arbeiten ortsspezifisch entwickelt. Auch Freunde und Besucher waren begeistert. So entwickelte sich die Idee immer konkreter, Künstlerfreunde einzuladen, an der Gestaltung des Gartens mitzuarbeiten. Keine einfache Aufgabe, da die verschiedensten Ideen und Ansichten, künstlerische Freiheiten, Respekt vor der Natur und natürliche Gegebenheiten unter einen Hut gebracht werden müssen. Eine Herausforderung, an der die eingeladenen Künstler und wir nun seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren arbeiten, eine Entwicklung, die im Einklang mit dem Gelände immer weiter wächst. Besucher, die über den holperigen Weg von der Provinz Straße nach La Serpara kommen, tauchen in eine andere Welt ein, erreichen einen kontemplativen Ort, an dem sie in aller Ruhe Kunst und Natur genießen können.
